Veils are everywhere in spiritual philosophy and practice, crossing eras, cultures, and religions. Many say there is a veil woven of subtle energy between the world of spirit and our material world. Veils hide the holy from the profane, the self from the expectations and judgment of a demanding world, our eyes from a blinding light.
A nun takes the veil in order to retire into spiritual service for life. The curtain in the temple keeps the Holy of Holies hidden from the eyes of the unhallowed. Some shamans and other spirit walkers wear fringed or semi-transparent veils or masks over their eyes so they can better see into the spirit world.
The goddess Isis wears a veil to remind us that she embodies the endless universe and all we cannot know.
Veils are useful spiritually both as a concept and a tool for growth. But they can also be used for more problematic purposes. They can hide what we don’t want to see, what others don’t want us to see. They can keep us from knowing the truth.
