“What we do now echoes in eternity.” ~ Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

There’s a lot going on in the skies of 2025, and the year is likely to be one for whatever media will hold our record books in the future — perhaps digital, perhaps parchment scrolls.

In this post, I’ll give an overview of what we can expect in 2025. If you want to keep up during the year, I’ll be posting quarterly updates at the solstices and equinoxes, monthly updates that are timed by the New Moons, and occasional missives on Full Moons, important aspects, and other astro-events. (I also do an occasional Q&A post, so if you have a question about astrology, email me.) You can read the December Solstice update here and the Capricorn New Moon post here.

Here are a few paragraphs for the astrologers. If that’s not you, skip over the italics to get to the plain English part.

(Astrologers: I’m looking primarily at outer planet (Jupiter through Pluto) aspects, sign changes, Cardinal ingress charts, eclipses, and retrogrades. I’ll get into more detail in upcoming posts, but for now, here’s the big picture of what’s going on with the outer planets.

Four of the five outermost planets are in the process of changing signs in 2025. Pluto completed the process in 2024, moving finally into Aquarius on November 19th where it will stay for 20 years. Additionally, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are in the process of forming an interesting and also unusual aspect pattern that will stay pretty much within orb, even as the first two planets move back and forth over the sign lines.

The aspect has been dubbed a Minor Grand Trine (MGT). It’s two planets in trine [Uranus and Pluto], both sextile another planet(s) [Neptune and Saturn] at their midpoint. This MGT will fade in and out of orb this year, then gather back together in 2026. The three outermost planets will remain in orb of this aspect for several years to come, with retrogrades, but no more sign changes.

Saturn and Neptune come within a few arc minutes of partile conjunction in early July at 2 degrees Aries before retrograding back into Pisces. The conjunction will only perfect once, in late February of 2026, again right at the powerful Aries Point. Then both planets will remain in Aries — Saturn for about 3 years, Neptune for 14 years. Uranus moves back and forth between Taurus and Gemini this year. Then in late April of 2026 Uranus moves into Gemini to stay for 7 years.

So what is in flux this year is solidifying next year. Food for thought, yes? And keep the elemental as well as the sign shifts in mind.

But wait, there’s Jupiter! Yes, Jupiter is also changing signs this year, as it does every year. In 2025, it moves from Gemini to Cancer in June, and immediately forms its final partile opening square with Saturn. And keep in mind that Pluto has been going back and forth over the degree of their conjunction in December of 2020.

Students: You might want to get out your ephemeris, and flip through the year, making notes on what you see. Don’t have an ephemeris? If you’re serious about astrology, pick one up. You can use online ephemerides, but I find they don’t give the same perspective, and there are no useful e-book versions. [and FYI, ephemerides is the plural. It’s pronounced eh·fuh·meh·ruh·deez.]

You’ll want to check out the eclipses, the various retrogrades, especially the Venus and Mercury ones in Aries in the spring, and Mars both Rx and out of bounds through late February. Cast the Cardinal Ingress charts, and keep in mind that the ongoing aspects between those three outermost planets means they are working together towards the profound civilizational changes that are heralded by this planetary dance.)

Finding Your Compass

The ambient energy is in flux this year, and we’ll have multiple chances to make changes in our lives. Flexibility, adaptability, and the courage of our convictions are needed to make wise decisions as the year presents us with various scenarios.

Resisting change is always an option, but this year, in most cases, it’s probably not the wisest one. If you don’t like the change you are seeing around you, then make your own changes in response; don’t dig in your heels and refuse to budge.

The changes may be physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, or any combination thereof. The decisions we make in response will be long-lasting. So, it’s a good idea to have some idea of what direction you want your life to move in, what’s most important to you, what your bedrock values are. What’s the North Star to your personal compass? If you pare down what’s important to you to the bare essentials, it will be easier to decide among the options.

For example, if you want a new place to live, before you get very precise about exactly where it is, what it looks like, and how much it costs, think about what “home” means to you. Home is a feeling as well as a place. If, in addition to your practical needs, you explore your emotions around what makes a place home, what or who you need to feel at home, then you will draw in the most suitable options for you, and make the best decision for your future.

There are levels of communication that happen well beyond our everyday consciousness. Our feelings, thoughts, and emotions all participate in that collective consciousness and can help connect us with people, places, and things through what may seem like coincidences but are really the subtle workings of the zeitgeist.

This kind of inner exploration is particularly important for witches and other magical practitioners, given this year’s planetary changes. Be excruciatingly honest with yourself, carefully consider why you are doing a working, and be clear but not overly specific about the outcome you are working for. Leave room for the unexpected. Stay in communication with your spiritual guides, and, if you don’t do this already, I suggest both meditation and divination prior to any workings. You don’t want to put things into motion if the timing is off, and timing is going to be key this year.

Breaking It Down

Overall, the year looks to be one major change after another. Both in the USA and on the global political stage, I expect a lot of fancy political footwork, with more than a few politicians tripping over their own feet.
